Yanghwa (South Korea, 1983) paints the anxiety of living in a frantic city like London. Swimming pools become the only place to rest and be herself, while cranes loom threateningly on the horizon (she had to change studio three times in a year because of real estate developments). Yanghwa works to create artworks that speak directly to the child within us all, invoking nostalgic memories of childhood and comfort. Her watercolor and pencil pieces are a vibrant and colourful exploration of memories and play and have been part of the V&A in London and Seoul Contemporary Art Museum collection. She has recently finished her PhD after two Masters degree in South Korea and London Central Saint Martins. She has also recently been selected as part of Bloomberg New Contemporaries, with group shows at the Liverpool Biennale and South London Gallery. Yanghwa has been exhibited internationally, most notable at the Saatchi Gallery (winner of Jealous Art Prize 2014) and the RA summer show.
